1. Water or dampness after it rains
If your basement gets wet, damp, or floods every time it rains, water isn't being managed around your foundation. This is the clearest sign you need a drainage solution.
2. A musty or earthy smell
That basement smell is moisture and often mold. If you smell it, water is getting in somewhere โ even if you can't see standing water.
3. White chalky residue on walls (efflorescence)
White powder on your foundation walls is mineral deposit left behind by water moving through the concrete. It's proof water is passing through your walls.
4. Cracks in the foundation walls or floor
Cracks let water in and can signal pressure from saturated soil. Hairline to wide, they should be inspected โ many can be sealed before they worsen.
5. Peeling paint or bubbling on basement walls
Moisture behind the wall pushes paint and coatings off. If finishes are failing, water is present.
6. Mold or mildew
Visible mold, or allergy symptoms that get worse in the basement, mean chronic moisture. Mold returns unless the water source is fixed.
7. A sump pump that runs constantly โ or none at all
A pump running non-stop means heavy water volume. No pump at all, in a Pittsburgh home, often means water has nowhere to go. Either way, your system needs a look. Call (412) 910-1540 for a free inspection.
